The Latvian Academy of Sciences

The Latvian Academy of Sciences is delegated by the Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia to coordinate national research programs and represent Latvia at the EraNet projects. In the context of joining the Europe Union the Latvian science policy is aimed at reorientating the Latvian research potential towards national and European priorities. The European Commission Opinions concerning the Application for Membership to the EU gave positive recognition of the activities of Latvian science. They stated that "Latvia has already taken significant steps towards the integration of its research system with the Western European system"( Agenda 2000).
Latvia has the research priorities regarding the EuroNanoMed and moving towards the European research area. Currently Latvia has the National Program is targeted to Material Sciences including particularly nanomaterials, biomaterials , etc. The program is planned for extension to the nanomedicine field to be focused on:
  • self assembled in organic-inorganic complexes and drug delivering and diagnostics;
  • nanomagnetic systems for treatment and diagnostics;
  • nanoparticle labeled endothelia cells;
  • nanostructured ferroelectric films and electrical charge functionalized nano layers of the surfaces or scaffolds;
  • molecular imaging positron emission tomography systems;
  • nanostructured biomimetic scaffolds or cardiovascular tissue engineering;
  • magnetic-driven endothelization of vascular scaffolds;
  • nanostructured biomaterials;
  • life cell based biological modeling to explore influence of the novel nanostructured materials, particles and films on bio objects;
  • analysis of microelements in living tissues by use of cyclotron radiation;
  • implementation of the research achievements in to clinical practice (ionizing radiation and photodynamic therapy employing radiation absorbing nanoparticles for local dose increment, nanoparticles and functionalized nanofilms based endoimplants, molecular imaging, angiography,etc.).
