The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is supporting innovative projects in various research areas - e. g. sustainable development, information and communication technologies, life sciences, chemistry and material sciences, transport or space research. BMBF is funding projects dedicated to applied research mainly based on competitive calls and peer-reviewed evaluations. The execution and administration of the programs is performed by a number of funding agencies (“Projektträger”) on behalf of the ministry.
Research in Nanomedicine is mainly supported in the context of the framework program WING (Werstoffinnovationen für Industrie und Gesellschaft / Material Innovations for Industry and Society). The respective funding measures are (i) “NanoforLife”, which started in 2005 and covered the three major subjects: drug delivery, implants/regenerative medicine and molecular imaging;(ii) “Bioaktive Implantate” and (iii) “MoBiTech”, which started in 2007 and are dedicated to Smart Implants and Molecular Imaging, respectively. The three funding measures comprise a funding volume of about 186 Mio. €. For their management VDI-TZ holds primary responsibility. Within the thematic scope of “NanoforLife”, new measures are in preparation on a national level.
